Lathe Chuck

Also called a scroll chuck, this handy wood accessory is mounted on a lathe and is used to hold and rotate the wood piece you鈥檙e working on as you shape it. The chuck holds short workpieces with a large diameter or irregular shapes in place in their jaws.

Lathe chucks attach to the lathe鈥檚 spindle with bolts. The backplate screws onto the spindle nose.

Types of Lathe Chucks

When stocking a decent woodworking shop, get more than one chuck. Of the seven common types of chuck, you鈥檙e least likely to use the air or hydraulic-operated chuck, typically used in manufacturing. There are six other types you may need in your wood workshop:

• Collet chuck
• Combination type chuck
• Drill chuck
• Four-jaw chuck
• Magnetic type chuck
• Three-jaw universal chuck
